New life into old genres

Phil Rickman looks at novels breathing new life into old genres: Belinda Bauer's serial killer procedural, Alison Littlewood's Victorian fairy story and Bill James's campus novel.

In the last of the current series, Phil Rickman presents three very different novels, each attempting to breathe new life into old genres. Welsh-based author Belinda Bauer has a new twist on the serial killer story, while Yorkshire writer Alison Littlewood offers a mysterious fairy story in a Victorian setting. Finally, Cardiff author Bill James revisits the territory of the campus novel with a story that bears more than a passing resemblance to events at a real university in South Wales.
