Getting tough on paramilitaries - will new organised crime campaign be the start?
Justice minister will today launch an 'End the Harm' campaign to warn people that buying counterfeit goods is unwittingly funding organised crime.
There were big calls last week for the police to get tougher on paramilitaries. It followed the revelation at the Policing Board that the PSNI had spent 拢1.6million in five months policing a UDA feud in the Castlemara estate in Carrick and senior officers called for mediation to ease tensions. The DUP MP for the area, Sammy Wilson, said that 'softly softly' approach has to stop.
Later today justice minister Claire Sugden will launch an 'End The Harm' campaign to warn people that buying counterfeit goods is unwittingly funding organised crime - including those with links to paramilitaries. Stephen talks to commentator Seamus Close and loyalist blogger Jamie Bryson.
Also on the programme, drivers who cause death by dangerous or careless driving could get life in prison under new government proposals. Ministers want to bring the offence, which has a maximum sentence of 14 years, in line with manslaughter. The proposed changes would only apply in England and Wales, as justice is devolved in Northern Ireland. Stephen talks to Peter Dolan, his son Enda was killed as he walked back to his room at Queen's University's student village in October 2014.
