鈥淵ou can鈥檛 always get what you want鈥� 鈥� the familiar words of a song carved out of the rock of popular music. The Rolling Stones launched that number almost fifty years ago but its sentiments are as old as the hills.

听

Of course we can鈥檛 always get what we want but we might be forgiven just now for thinking that we can. For this is the season dominated by what we want. We鈥檙e shopping for what we want, writing to Santa to tell him what we want, hoping against hope that our Christmas presents will turn out to be what we want.

听

It鈥檚 all fun and games and I shall be as merry as the best of them but this season does seem sometimes to have a hollow ring 鈥榗os, quite simply, you can鈥檛 always get what you want.

听

The next line of the chorus of that song brings things back into balance. 鈥淚f you try sometimes well,鈥� it declares, 鈥測ou might find you get what you need.鈥� Aha! Now we鈥檙e on to something.

听

This season is known to Christians as Advent 鈥� a time of waiting, waiting expectantly, for the great event of Christmas Day. I wish the story of that day weren鈥檛 so well known, familiarity breeds a crass contempt.

听

Christmas tells of the way, in the dispensation of God, we get what we need rather than what we want 鈥� a fleshed out message of hope, the embodiment of unconditional love, the answer to our deepest questions about the meaning and the potential of human life.

听

Somehow, we鈥檝e managed to turn this season of waiting into a season of wanting. One of my gurus bewailed the fact that we seemed to know the cost of everything but the value of nothing. I鈥檇 love to be able to do some reverse magic for, as another of my gurus put it, the meaning is in the waiting.
