The Białowieża Forest

Plans to increase logging in an ancient forest in east Poland have proved controversal. The government say they need to increase the logging limits in one area of the Białowieża Forest to deal with an infestation of spruce bark beetle. But there is concern that this could devastate a precious environment unique in Europe. The natural forest dates back thousands of years. Some believe the spruce bark beetle to be an excuse to log more trees and UNESCO and the European Commission are so concerned that they are investigating the issue.
