The Choir at Proms Extra

Sara Mohr-Pietch marks the centenary of Hubert Parry's Jerusalem, with guest choir Blossom Street singing songs by Judith Weir, Elgar, Parry and the Beatles.

Sara Mohr-Pietch introduces a special edition of The Choir, recorded in front of a live audience at Imperial College Union. 2016 marks the centenary of a song that has become closely associated with the Proms - Hubert Parry's "Jerusalem". An instant success from the occasion when it was first heard in 1916, Sara and guests will be talking about what lies behind the broad and enduring appeal of this unofficial anthem. Led by its innovative director Hilary Campbell, critically acclaimed choir Blossom Street puts Parry into context with a round-up of songs by British composers including Elgar and a George Herbert setting from Master of the Queen's Music, Judith Weir; and we celebrate the power of voices singing together in Lennon and McCartney's "Hey Jude" as well as "Jerusalem" itself. Between the songs, Sara will be catching up with some of the members of this vibrant professional choir in Meet My Choir and this week's Choral Classic is drawn from Parry's late masterpiece, his moving "Songs of Farewell".
