Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

Reverend Sharon Grenham-Thompson

Vicar in Milton Keynes:

There’s a line from the hymn Amazing Grace that goes ‘I once was lost, but now I’m found, was blind but now I see.’ I’ve met a few so-called ‘lost souls’ over the years, but I think the hymn could apply to most of us at one time or another. It’s quite easy for life to wander off track, as we get caught up in the adventures we’re having or the goals we’ve set ourselves. Blinkered by what we’re doing, we don’t notice the gathering dark - perhaps relationship difficulties, our own growing stress, or an emptiness in our heart. Even when we do notice the shadows, we can be too stubborn and proud to ask for help, struggling on until we hardly know where we’re going anymore.

This was brought home to me last Saturday evening, when I decided to go out on my new bike. It was warm and sunny, so I decided to go a bit further than usual, to a big lake a few miles away.

I was about halfway round when I became aware that it was getting dark rapidly. And, total novice that I am, I hadn’t yet fixed any lights to my new bike. I was a good five miles from home, but far too stubborn and proud to ring my husband and ask him to come and find me.  Most of my journey home was along well-lit cycle paths, but there was a bit along a winding road, which was really scary with no lights.  When I came to a woodland path I could barely see a thing under the trees, so I had to get off and walk.

By now I was tired and a bit freaked out. That stubbornness and pride had to go - I dialled our home number and rather sheepishly asked my husband to come and meet me with a torch. He did better than that - he drove down the woodland lane, put my bike in the boot and rescued me!

Just like ringing for help from the woods, I find comfort in knowing that when I feel I can’t go on, I can call out in prayer and God will come to meet me. But whether it’s on a bike ride, or the journey of life, far better to make sure I carry the light with me, so I don’t get lost in the dark.
