Chris's Pause for Thought: Ann Easter

Chris's Pause for Thought: Ann Easter

From Canon Ann Easter, Chaplain to the Queen:

My son tells me that there are about 700 festivals this year, featuring everything from heavy metal to crafts to literature – whatever you enjoy, there’s a festival to take part in.

They tend to happen at weekends which makes it a bit difficult if you have to work on Sundays but I have been to one festival – my then boyfriend Christopher and I went to Cropredy in the late eighties and saw Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span, and I remember a blissfully warm, golden summer evening of music and dancing til the early hours.

At the centre of a festival is the idea of celebration – the word comes from the same root as ‘feast’ – and certainly, spending a couple of days in a happy, relaxed atmosphere, sharing good things and finding out about some more, being carefree and safe and having a little break away from work and worry – what’s not to celebrate??

I reckon that a festival can be a gift and a blessing because perhaps the one of God’s commandments that we most neglect these days is the one that says:

Observe a Sabbath and keep it holy; you have six days to do your work but the seventh day is a day of rest……

The Bible tells us that God took a day off to recuperate after six days’ work creating the whole universe but we like to convince ourselves that, somehow, we’re above that and we surround ourselves with beeping, flashing reminders of how much we’re needed so that we can’t rest.  And I believe that God wants us to have some space in our lives, a chance to rest and relax.

We may not be able to go to a festival for all sorts of reasons or even take a whole day off – but I think we’re usually the one that’s stopping us from taking a break, from smelling the roses, from seeing the smiles, from enjoying a cup of tea or whatever it is that is a feast for our senses and a rest for our souls. Let’s go festival!
