Chris鈥 Pause For Thought: Sarah Joseph

Chris鈥 Pause For Thought: Sarah Joseph
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

Confession time 鈥 we鈥檙e just over halfway through Ramadan and I鈥檓 absolutely exhausted! The fasts鈥攖he longest in the UK for 33 years鈥攁re taking their toll. You get to six pm, you鈥檙e aching from hunger and then you realise there is still three and a half hours to go.
I feel debilitated by fasting, and by the lack of sleep. For sure, I鈥檓 carrying on life. I鈥檓 writing, doing some Broadcasting, project planning, plus looking after the children, cooking, trying to keep the house vaguely tidy, but to keep going day in, day out, is an exercise in mind conquering the body, of pushing past feeling terrible in order to accomplish the mere basics of life.
鈥淲hy do this to yourself?鈥 I hear some of you ask. And believe me, I do ask myself the same question, however there are bigger issues than my temporary discomfort.
I know there is an end to this. It hurts to fast for over 19 hours 鈥 but my table is spread with food in the evening. I also know that this hardship will shortly come to an end. Normal service will soon be resumed. I鈥檒l be snacking again on my tea and biscuits before I know it.
But what if I could not see an end? What if I had to try and keep going, depleted by hunger and sleep deprivation on a daily basis? How would I cope? How would I summon the will, and the strength, and the sense of purpose to keep pushing through? Could I even do so? Or would my will, and my hope, and my courage in the face of adversity, be worn down by hunger pangs, and tiredness, and the lack of seeing any way through?

Ramadan is an extraordinary period. It takes resilience, dedication, and faith to fast every day for a month. There is the hope that one will come out of it mentally and spiritually stronger, but before the self-congratulations鈥
Regardless of whether you fast or not, there鈥檚 a problem here. The fact is, literally hundreds of millions of people live their lives depleted by insufficient nutrition, going to bed, night after night, hungry. There is no end for them. Hunger is their normal.

I believe we should extend our hands to them to pull them out of their poverty, because I can鈥檛 imagine how they will be able to climb out with such little energy.
