Chris’ Pause For Thought: Cormac Murphy O'Connor

Chris’ Pause For Thought: Cormac Murphy O'Connor

From Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor:

Ìý

England only drew their football match against Slovakia last night and I’m very disappointed. It occurred to me that there are different attitudes taken in life by people. There are those who are apathetic; there are those who are fanatic and there are those who are moderate.ÌýÌý I am not for the apathetic because apathetic people just don’t care.ÌýÌý In Scripture it says, I know all about you, how you are neither hot nor cold. ÌýI wish you were one or the other but since you are neither, but only lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth.ÌýÌý That comes from the Book of Revelations – pretty rough stuff.ÌýÌýÌý Nor am I for the zealot, because the zealot is someone who scorns consequences and does not care about other people’s feelings and does not listen.ÌýÌý Zealots can be a pain.ÌýÌý And lastly, there are the moderates, in other words, people who are balanced, who see things with a sense of proportion.Ìý But it has to be worked at.Ìý For instance, although I care that England won or lost or drew, I don’t think that’s the end of things.ÌýÌý All sport, in one way and another, has to take victory or defeat with a sense of proportion, it’s not the end of the world – there will always be another day.ÌýÌý So in talking to you this morning, I don’t want you to be apathetic or a fanatic, but I want you to be -Ìý put it this way -Ìý a passionate moderate, that you are able to care deeply about things, even if you can’t do everything.ÌýÌý I like the story about Mother Teresa of Calcutta.Ìý As you know, she cared deeply about the poor children who were dying on the streets in Calcutta and she took them in and cared for them.ÌýÌý And a journalist once said to her, Mother Teresa, there are thousands and thousands of these children on the streets of Calcutta and elsewhere in India, how can you save all of them?ÌýÌý And Mother Teresa replied, One by one.ÌýÌý We can’t change everything.Ìý We can’t always do what we want to do but we can do something and do it because we care deeply about things in our life and that matters very, very much.ÌýÌý
