Music for Cats

Mary Anne Hobbs is joined by David Teie of the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra, who has worked with Metallica, to talk about feline music taste and his album Music for Cats.

Mary Anne's guest is David Teie, the conductor and music director of the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra, and faculty member at the University of Maryland's School of Music. He has also performed as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra under Russian maestro Mstislav Rostropovich, and played cello on Metallica's 1999 album, S&M.

Teie's invention of species-specific music was described by the New York Times as the number one idea of 2009. He contends that every species has an intuitive biological response to sounds present in their early development. On his new album Music For Cats, Teie has incorporated feline-centric sounds into his music. An independent study at the University of Wisconsin verified that Music for Cats resonates conclusively with its audience, writing that "cats showed a significant preference for and interest in species-appropriate music."

This is a must-listen radio programme for all cats. And their owners.
