Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:聽聽聽聽聽聽聽

If I had to choose one word to sum up what I think about Adele鈥檚 latest album it would be 鈥淗onesty.鈥 No one can argue about her music or her ability to command the space she stands in. But what fills me with admiration is the courage she shows in her everyday life, her readiness to see the mistakes she鈥檚 made, her willingness to let others in to her struggles and her hopes.

At the end of the day, the most fundamental questions we all have to face are the oldest ones known to human beings. Who am I? Whose am I? Where have I come from? Where am I headed? I remember one of my teachers showing me those questions engraved on an ancient tombstone over 2,000 years old. Someone thought they were important then; I suspect they鈥檙e just as important now. One of the tracks on Adele鈥檚 new album is called Lea Valley. I love it because she addresses precisely these questions. The Lea Valley is where she was born. It鈥檚 who she is. Lovers come and go. Life brings its burdens. But all along she knows she鈥檚 the girl who grew up by the river Lea. 鈥淭here was something in the water, now that something鈥檚 in me.鈥 She knows she can鈥檛 turn the clock back. But nor can she deny where she鈥檚 come from: 鈥淚t鈥檚 in my roots,鈥 she sings, 鈥渋n my veins, in my blood.鈥 She may blame the River Lea (and she does), she may want to turn her back on it (and she does); but it will forever be part of what鈥檚 shaped her identity. Knowing who we are is mightily important. Many of us believe that God made us, - that鈥檚 where we come from, who we are; and we鈥檙e called to love one another, - that鈥檚 our direction of travel, where we鈥檙e headed. Get those things right and then 鈥. who knows?
