Ken Vandermark

Jez Nelson presents Chicago-based saxophonist and composer Ken Vandermark performing with his ensemble Made To Break. Plus a survey of the Chicago jazz scene and new releases.

Chicago-based saxophonist and composer Ken Vandermark presents his latest ensemble, Made To Break, an improvising quartet featuring American percussionist Tim Daisy, Austrian vocalist/reeds player Christof Kurzmann and Jasper Stadhouders, an electric bassist from the Netherlands.

Vandermark moved to Chicago in 1989 and has long been established as a key figure on the city's music scene. In addition to working with the likes of Peter Br枚tzmann and Mats Gustafsson in reeds trio Sonore, he has led a series of highly regarded ensembles, among them the Vandermark 5 and Spaceways Inc., with percussionist Hamid and bassist Nate McBride. Made to Break has been described as his most radical project yet, drawing on influences from the music of Ethiopia, punk band the Ex, John Cage and Morton Feldman.

Also on the programme, Jez Nelson talks to jazz writer Peter Margasak of the Chicago Reader who surveys other recent developments on the Windy City's jazz scene and introduces some of the best new releases.
