Good morning. Summer – I love summer. Our garden is coming into full bloom, the vegetables are cropping nicely, and the chickens are laying more - enriched by the longer days.
The summer holidays have finally begun. No ridiculously early morning starts, no child stressed from homework, no school runs, no Sunday night rush to get uniforms ready, no bags to be packed.
I love the downtime of the summer. I love the lack of pressure and expectation. And I love my children being around.
I also know that these moments are fleeting.Ìý My children are all teenagers now and have their own schedules and plans. It seems but yesterday that there was no greater fun than a water fight in the garden, and the mischievous joy of their favourite meal eaten in front of a film instead of at the table. Now they are doing summer jobs, signing up for summer courses, and heading off on holiday with cousins rather than being at home for the whole time. It brings me happiness to see them grow in independence, but there is a tinge of sadness at the speed with which time is passing.Ìý
I remember the long holidays spent with my grandmother, the smell of creosote on fences, the taste of blackberries freshly picked from the bush, and the sound of the ice-cream man. All of that is long since gone. Yet I have my memories, and the absolute joy of simple things. I appreciate them so much now; much more even than I did when I was a child.
Our Lord help us create good memories in the company of people we love. Grant us joy in the small things which we experience. Grant us contentment and satisfaction from all that You bestow on us, and allow our hearts to be made happy by simplicity. Ameen.
