Blue Plaque for Harry Hollywood.
Harry Hollywood, or ‘Wee Harry’ as he was affectionately known, was Commodore of the Fisher Fleet Newry. He was born and raised in Fathom, close to the Victoria Locks, and it’s here on Saturday that the Ulster History Circle will be unveiling a Blue Plaque in his honour. Anne-Marie will be hearing about Harry, his life and his legacy with Maud Hamill of the Ulster History Circle and Michael O’Hare of the Newry Maritime Association.
The Blue Plaque will be unveiled at Victoria Lock on the Omeath Road, Newry at 2 o’clock on Saturday 25th July.
Foster Donkeys
The Donkey Sanctuary at Ballypallady near Templepatrick took 388 donkeys into its care last year, and it is consistently inundated with requests to help rescue and care for donkeys in need or at risk. Anne-Marie has been speaking with Jane Bruce, the sanctuary’s Welfare officer, about her work to find loving homes for these gentle animals, and their aim to find the animals loving, private foster homes.
The Coast in Bloom
During the summer months, amongst the natural beauty of our coast lies a riot of colour as the flowers bloom along the grasslands at Killard point. Caroline Nolan took a trip to the point, situated just at the entrance to Strangford Lough, where she met David Thompson, Property Landscape Manager with the National Trust, who told her why this landscape commands such respect and admiration.
Remembering Robert Quigg
This month 99 years ago saw thousands of Ulstermen fight in the Battle of the Somme. One of the few who survived was Robert Quigg, a man from Bushmills in County Antrim. Robert was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery, something that the people of Bushmills are very proud of. So proud, in fact, that they plan to commemorate him with a bronze sculpture, which they hope to have in place in time for next year’s centenary. Anne-Marie will be hearing from Keith Beattie, one of the men who helped set up the commemorative society in honour of Robert Quigg.
