Giorno dei Morti, Malcolm Sinclair
Producer's Note
Le Midi, il Mezzogiorno, el Sur鈥. The South is many things to many people. But this programme takes its inspiration from summers spent in the heady, lavender- and thyme-scented hillsides of Provence or central Italy, or in the bare plains around Toledo鈥
It鈥檚 of course personal, and this south won鈥檛 be everyone else鈥檚, but here are classic texts of the British traveller abroad, like Hilaire Belloc鈥檚 wonderful Path to Rome which opens the programme, and Robert Louis Stevenson鈥檚 wry and witty Travels with a Donkey. France鈥檚 Midi offers us the dark, threatening words of Guy de Maupassant鈥檚 Corsica-set A Vendetta, the joyous diary of Alphonse Daudet from his Provencal windmill and the delightful rustic bouncy narrative of Marcel Pagnol鈥檚 Jean de Florette. In lyrical mood, Tennyson evokes a heat-filled Summer Night, DH Lawrence鈥檚 Giorno dei Morti paints a sombre Italian procession, Paul Val茅ry鈥檚 celebrated Le Cimeti猫re Marin finds the perfect English form in a version by Cecil Day-Lewis and Elaine Feinstein contributes a touching memory of a holiday with her aged father, Rosemary in Provence.
Music is by Berlioz, Bizet, Falla, Rodrigo, Canteloube, Tarrega and Albeniz, and in popular vein, classic songs by Michel Sardou, Michel Fugain and Nino Ferrer. Also featured is the debut collection of Umbrian folksongs by the brilliant Italian ensemble Sonidumbra and the sensational voice of Barbara Bucci 鈥 joyful and plangent music that spans the Renaissance and today鈥檚 folk traditions.
