Script - Ramadan, a training school
Good morning. Fasting in Ramadan is regarded as one of the pillars of Islam. It is a unique act of sincere obedience to God. It is as if one is living like God who does not eat and drink at all. The degree of sincerity in this act of worship cannot be matched in any other kind of worship. When any person prays in company others around them can see that they are praying. Their sincerity may be questionable. When any person performs a pilgrimage others around them can see them. Their sincerity may be questionable.聽 However, no one can tell whether a person is fasting or not. There are no visible signs. Only the fasting person and God know about it. God takes pride in the fasting person and says, 鈥淭he fasting is for me and I will personally reward the one who fasts鈥.
Fasting is like a personal revolution against everyday habits and conventions that enslave people. Before fasting a person could eat and drink as they please. When Ramadan comes it puts a stop to that. Now for a whole month they have to go without food and drink from dawn until sunset. It is as if they are being trained for unforeseen changes in life. Perhaps to be prepared for tougher times. Life is never the same. Circumstances always change. We all have ups and downs; healthy today ill tomorrow, rich today poor tomorrow, well fed today starving tomorrow, self-sufficient today reliant tomorrow, resident today traveler tomorrow. Our circumstances change all the time. Ramadan trains us up to face some of these changes and uncertainties of life.
Dear God, help us to prepare for this life and the life here after, amin.
