VE Day Celebrations
Fermanagh is just one of the many locations across the UK that was chosen to light an official VE Day Beacon to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the end of WW11. It happened last night with the Fermanagh beacon, with its V for Victory burner placed on Castle Island on Lough Erne and lit by The Viscount Brookeborough. Ann Marie talks live to Selwyn Johnston, a local historian and Curator of Headhunters Railway Museum and veteran pilot, Bill Eames who were at the ceremony.聽
Steinbeck Celebration
The Annual Steinbeck Celebration is showcasing at the Roe Valley Arts Centre from 8-9 May. It explores the Noble Prize winning author鈥檚 ancestral connection to Mulkeraugh - Steinbeck鈥檚 maternal grandfather, Samual Hamilton came from there. Helen Mark went along to meet a local man, Dougie Bartlett in the townland to get the full story.聽
The North West 200
It鈥檚 Ireland鈥檚 largest outdoor sporting event and the first race gets underway next Saturday 16th May, with more than 10,000 people lining the route. There are some of the biggest names in sport competing and the organisers are hoping for a safe and enjoyable Race Week which starts today.聽 Anne Marie goes lives to Gerard McAuley, Operations Director for the race at the starting grid.聽
Prince of Ulster
Steve Flanders has written a book about John DeCourcy an Anglo Norman Knight who led his men from the front and conquered new territory after a stunning victory that led to the establishment of a Norman lordship across the province. Prince of Ulster personifies the classic image of the Anglo-Norman Knight. Anne Marie went along to meet the author in County Antrim.聽
The Ring of Gullion
1800 foot high Slieve Gullion is where Ireland鈥檚 highest, surviving, passage tomb is. But the ancient Cairn is in need of repairs because of the accidental damage caused by thousands of visitors to the site every year. The Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership is looking for volunteers to help with the restoration of an event next Saturday. Alison Henderson, Outreach Officer with the group talks to Anne Marie from our Banbridge studio about the project.聽
