The First Cut Is the Deepest

Episode 6 of 6

Sitcom set in Stormont. Hunt must come up with a rescue plan when he learns that the whole department is about to be abolished.

Because of cuts the whole department is going to be abolished. Can Hunt come up with a rescue plan before McCoubrey and O'Hare restart the Troubles to save their Ministerial posts?

Ricky and Sinead are summoned to see Hunt. Because of departmental cuts one of them will be fired. Hunt has to decide who it will be. Ricky and Sinead quickly turn on each other, each saying the other should go. Ministers McCoubrey and O'Hare divide along sectarian lines. McCoubrey backs Ricky saying there are too many unemployed male Protestants. O'Hare argues Sinead should stay because Catholics where discriminated against for years so 'it's only fair'. To prove themselves to Mr Hunt, Ricky and Sinead compete with each other to see who can stay behind after hours and work the latest. They end up getting locked in and have to 'spend the night together'. Ricky thinks Sinead is sleeping and confesses his true feelings. Unknown to him, Sinead has heard everything. The next morning Hunt is in his office. He has set up a camcorder and is practicing being Alan Sugar, pointing his finger and saying 'You're fired!'. He calls Ricky and Sinead in and enjoys watching them squabble before he drops a bombshell. They are both going because the whole department is being abolished. Hunt is being promoted to the Department of Education. When McCoubrey and O'Hare realise they are in danger of losing their Ministerial posts, they spring into action. They even appear to be hatching a plot to restart the Troubles to make the work of their 'shared future' department indispensable. Hunt meets with his boss, Sir Toby. He is gobsmacked when Sir Toby tells him he's not getting a job in Education because he failed his 11-Plus and they 'can't have a thicko in the post'. Hunt realises he has to come up with a plan to save his department. But can he do it before his Ministers restart the Troubles?
