Digital Past

Adam Walton hears about innovative ways, using digital technology, to engage the public with our history and heritage, as a major conference comes to Swansea.

The "Digital Past" conference (held on 11th & 12th February) will bring together experts from the creative digital industries and representatives from various heritage and history groups.

The organiser Sue Fielding, of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, explains to Adam that much can be learnt from the world of video games, in terms of presenting the past in exciting ways. Also we hear how the depiction of history and archaeology on many TV documentaries, has raised public expectations in terms of the presentation of our heritage.

Aled Lloyd from "think play tv" will be discussing how video game technology can be adapted to produce immersive projects illustrating history and heritage, including a digital presentation of Oystermouth Castle in The Mumbles.

Joanna Hambly from the Department of History at the University of St Andrews discusses how using a specially developed "app" along with social media, are having a major positive impact on preserving Scotland's coastal heritage. A similar app is available in Wales via Archwilio.

Joining the conference is Niall 脫 h脫isin from Dublin based "noho" who will be discussing innovative ways of presenting historical stories using technology such as 3D graphics.聽

Andrew Lamb, a PhD student at Leicester, is coming to Swansea to discuss "Europa Barbarorum", an initiative to press for more accurate portrayal of history in video games.
