Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of Emel, the Muslim lifestyle magazine:

So it鈥檚 almost the end of January. A twelfth of the New Year almost gone. But look on the bright side we survived the most miserable day of the year which was apparently last Monday. Our resolutions however may not be intact. Apparently 88% of resolutions don鈥檛 survive the month. It appears that our brains are just not wired with the willpower necessary to withstand the big commitments we make to ourselves at the start of a New Year.

But you know what! Whilst all this stuff makes for some media articles and coffee machine chit-chat, at the end of the day we just have to get on with it. Every day is a New Day 鈥 we don鈥檛 have to wait for a New Year to prompt us to do something.

There is a beautiful saying amongst the Sacred Traditions. A servant of God messes things up, so he goes to God and says 鈥淔orgive me.鈥 God 鈥 being The Most Merciful, forgives him. Then the servant messes up again. He returns to God and asks for forgiveness. God again forgives him. This keeps happening. Every time the servant messes up he asks God for forgiveness, and every time God forgives him. Eventually-because God knows that although this servant is weak, he is sincere in striving to do right-God says to him, 鈥淒o what you wish because I have forgiven you.鈥

Now I am not advocating we constantly mess up, that we constantly break our promises to others and to ourselves. What I am saying is that things often do not go as smoothly as we would like. We need to factor that reality into our thinking so that when things do go wrong we have the stamina and the resilience to keep going, for keeping going is the most important thing.

The scientists tell us we can help our brains by breaking down our resolutions into small manageable pieces, to tell people about what we resolve to do, and to reward ourselves when we stick to something. But even after all of this 鈥 there may be a day when we don鈥檛 make the gym, where we aren鈥檛 as patient as we had resolved to be, when we failed on our resolution, or when we feel low.

We just have to get through the miserable days 鈥 be they the 鈥淏lue Monday of January鈥 or any other day of the year. 听And if we mess up our resolutions, we just have to deal with it, and make a new one the next day, or recommit to the one we broke.
