Crucial Vinyl: Culture's Two Sevens Clash

The Don's Crucial Vinyl, an album that has shaped his musical taste, is Culture's 1977 debut album Two Sevens Clash.

Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks and explains why it means so much to him.

This week he picks Culture's 1977 debut album Two Sevens Clash, produced in Kingston, Jamaica by Joe Gibbs.

Don says, 'Culture's Two Sevens Clash is a must-have for the original cover alone, and the band is another
great example of the three-piece vocal harmony groups that were so popular in Jamaica.

The album's release coincided with the punk explosion in the UK, and the title track really captured the punks' imaginations. Two Seven Clash refers to Marcus Garvey's apocalyptic prophecy that there would be chaos on the 7th of July 1977, when the sevens 'met'. This took on a whole other meaning for punks and the track provided the perfect soundtrack to their cultural ground zero.'

As ever, Don's other selections cross time, space and genre.
