Jonathan Edwards presents live coverage of the 2014 Great North Run.

A specially extended broadcast celebrates the millionth finisher of the world's biggest and most iconic half-marathon. 57,000 runners are set off by honorary starter Lord Coe, who will also be at South Shields to greet the millionth finisher home.

Mo Farah returns for a second consecutive year, this time hoping to go one better than 2013 when he was narrowly beaten in a sprint finish by Kenenisa Bekele. Mo needs to overcome an elite field that includes Uganda's Stephen Kiprotich, the defending world and Olympic marathon champion.

The women's race is led by Tirunesh Dibaba, who returns to defend her crown. She faces strong opposition in the form of Edna Kiplagat, the reigning world marathon champion, Tiki Gelana, the Olympic marathon champion, and Mary Keitany, the former half marathon world champion. Gemma Steel, winner of the 2013 Great Birmingham Run, leads the British challenge.

The wheelchair races are equally intriguing. Jade Jones, a bronze medallist at the Commonwealth Games and recent European Championships 5000m, lines up against fellow Briton Shelly Woods, a former winner of the Great North Run and silver medallist in the London 2012 Marathon. Simon Lawson is hoping to provide a British winner in the men's race.

The Great North Run is nothing without the mass runners, and in 2014 a record number take to the start line to the north of the city centre, before crossing the iconic Tyne Bridge and making their way to South Shields for the finish by the sea. Denise Lewis, Colin Jackson, Tina Daheley and Phil Jones provide live updates from the course.

Commentary comes from Steve Cram, Andrew Cotter, Brendan Foster and the former world marathon and half-marathon champion, Paula Radcliffe.
