A short reflection and prayer with Pastor Lindsay Allen.

Prayer for the Day Thursday 4 September Pastor Lindsay Allen
Good morning,
As an Ulsterman I鈥檓 all too familiar with the deep passions that can be aroused over questions of citizenship and national identity. Having been born in Northern Ireland, I can carry two passports, a UK one issued in Belfast and an Irish one issued in Dublin.
However as a Christian, I have, metaphorically, a third one!
The Apostle Paul writes to Christians in Philippi and tells them,
鈥淥ur citizenship is in heaven.鈥
He is reminding them, that although they have had the privilege of Roman citizenship conferred on them, they are in fact also citizens of a much greater Kingdom.
And the challenge for those who claim to be citizens of that Kingdom is to ensure that their perspective on life is not determined principally by the fact their nationality on earth but by their citizenship of Heaven. So wherever I come from, whether it鈥檚 from the UK or outside it, is of secondary importance. My outlook and my values, my response to events and my behaviour towards my fellow human beings must first and foremost, be that of a Christian.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the great gift of Salvation and for the hope of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ your Son.
And though we live in the knowledge that our citizenship is in heaven, we pray that by your grace you enable us live as good citizens in the cities, towns and villages in which you have placed us. Help us to be good neighbours, contributing to the well being of our communities. Enable us to be loyal, honest, law-abiding and faithful until that day when you call us home.
Amen
