A spiritual comment and prayer to begin the day with the Reverend Mike Starkey.

The Reverend Mike Starkey
Good morning.Ìý Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the most celebrated architects of the last century.. and his designs included the Guggenheim Museum in New York. When he was a boy of 9.. he walked with his uncle across a snowy field. His uncle was a driven and impatient man.. who was very hot on rules. For him there was always a right way and a wrong way to do everything. Once they’d walked across the snowy field.. the uncle turned round and pointed to the different tracks they’d each made across the field.
The uncle’s footsteps were precise and went in a straight line from A to B. Young Frank’s tracks wandered and shuffled all over the place and even backtracked on themselves. The uncle told the boy he hadn’t walked properly across the field. He’d done it wrong by wandering around and wasting time.Ìý

Years later.. Frank Lloyd Wright remembered this episode from his childhood. And he wrote this: ‘I determined right then not to miss most things in life.. as my uncle had’. He could see that his uncle’s rule-based.. legalistic approach to life may have got things done briskly and efficiently but that his uncle missed so much of the joy of life along the way.
Lord God, at the start of this day help me not to be so focused on my destination that I neglect to enjoy the journey. Open my eyes to the wonder and beauty of life. Help me make time for humour.. music.. and conversation. Help me not to miss those things that really matter most.Ìý Amen
