Can you lower cholesterol through diet?
Over 30,000 women die from coronary heart disease each year and according to the figures from the Office for National Statistics it’s the biggest killer of women between 65-79, killing nearly three times as many women as breast cancer. Evidence suggests that high cholesterol is linked to a risk of heart disease and that cutting down on fatty foods can help lower the risk of heartÌýdisease and strokes. But in a new bookÌý ‘Eat your way to lower cholesterol’, Dr Laura Corr, consultant cardiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’s hospital, says that creating a healthy diet that lowers cholesterol is more about adding the right foods to your diet than cutting out foods and that the latestÌýstudies have identified six food-types we should be eating more of. But what is the scientific evidence behind this and can you actually lower your cholesterol through eating more of certain foods?
