Many years ago I flew back to Heathrow from Japan. Looking out of the airplane windows my Asian companions were surprised to see that London wasn鈥檛 completely fog bound. I couldn鈥檛 understand why they would think like this until they then went on to eagerly enquire if I had ever been to 221b Baker Street?

Even then I knew that the particular house they'd imagined, swirling in Victorian vapours, never actually existed. The residence of Sherlock Holmes was entirely fictional, a creation of the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who died on this day in 1930.

听

Sherlock Holmes has outlived his creator, and remains Conan Doyle鈥檚 greatest legacy perhaps providing a timely reminder that after our death, what we leave behind of worth is rarely the material things we may have worked hard to accumulate. More often it is what we've helped create that people value most.听听

听

For some of us this might be the books we've written, our art or our inventions, but for most of us our legacy will be the quiet difference we have made to circles of friends and family.

听

When Jesus knew his death was close at hand he gathered his friends and prayed that they'd continue to follow the pattern of life he'd shared with them. His legacy was more than just His teaching; it was the very people who followed him. Through His example this young community had seen how to love God and those around them with all their heart and mind and soul. And after Jesus death, inspired by his resurrection, they went on trying to live as he had taught them, often falling short, but never giving up and in doing so they helped to change the world.

Dear God

how we live today

is our richest legacy for those who live tomorrow听听听听听听

may our present be full of courage, faith and cheerfulness

so that the future is blessed with hope and love and freedom
