Hillary Clinton talks to Jenni Murray about life at the political top table, chronicled in her new book, Hard Choices.

Hillary Clinton was offered the post of US Secretary of State in 2008 by Barack Obama who just months earlier had been her rival for the Democratic Party's nomination for the presidency. She took the job and with it the challenges of representing her country on the world stage. She talks to Jenni about her new book "Hard Choices', about the tough decisions she faced in shaping US foreign policy.

In 1973 Billie Jean King performed in the most watched tennis match ever. She played former tennis champion and keen chauvinist Bobby Riggs in The Battle of the Sexes. In a treat from our Archive she talks about a documentary made to mark the 40th anniversary of the match

Vera Brittain, author of Testament of Youth published a controversial pamphlet in 1943 which argued against the Allied use of saturation bombing in Germany during the Second World War. The German city of Hamburg, two thirds of which was destroyed by Allied bombs has decided to honour her by naming a canal after her. Her daughter Baroness Shirley Williams and her friend Helge Rubinstein travelled back to the City last week and describe what it was like to receive the honour which, for different reasons, celebrates both their mothers.

The man offering her America’s top diplomatic job, Barack Obama, had, just months earlier, been her rival for the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency. And, she had just spent the last dozen weeks campaigning for him to become president. She took the job and with it the challenges of representing her country on the world stage for the next four years. She has just written ‘Hard Choices’, a book about the tough decisions she faced in shaping US foreign policy. Jenni talks to Hillary Clinton about life at the political top table.

In 1944, Vera Brittain, author of Testament of Youth and Testament of Friendship, published a controversial pamphlet which argued against the Allied use of saturation bombing in Germany during the Second World War. Seeds of Chaos: What Mass Bombing Really Means was largely rejected in Britain and the US, but the German city of Hamburg, two thirds of which was destroyed by Allied bombs in 1943, has decided to honour Vera Brittain by naming a canal after her.Ìý On the 28th of June, Vera’s daughter Baroness Shirley Williams and her friend Helge Rubinstein, whose German Jewish family became refugees in Watford in 1939, took part in a ceremony to cement the Anglo-German friendship and to pay tribute to Vera Brittain’s pacifism.Ìý Baroness Williams and Helge join Jenni to describe receiving the honour which, for different reasons, celebrated both of their mothers.

She playedÌýformer tennis champion and keen chauvinist Bobby Riggs in The Battle of the Sexes. And she won.Ìý Last year a documentary about the match and Billie Jean’s battle for equal pay and treatment was released to mark the 40th anniversary of the match. She talked to Jenni alongside ÌýStacey Allaster, Chief executive and chairman of theÌý Women’s Tennis Association about the documentary and her life on the tennis courts.
