Good morning.

A friend of mine was for many years in charge of a group of seaside parishes in southern Ireland living in a fine Rectory overlooking the sea in the loveliest of landscapes. His parishioners he told me, were generous, co-operative and totally dedicated to their church.

Even Primrose, whose real name translated means Springtime, even she was by most people鈥檚 standards an angel, but she had one particular weakness which invariably expressed itself around聽 the summer solstice.

Now don鈥檛 get me wrong, Primrose was good natured, helpful and supportive, and everything that a vicar could desire but she was a pessimist, and she enjoyed her pessimism. No matter what was being planned in the church she would find every reason for telling you why it wouldn鈥檛 work here, and how Reverend so and so had tried it in 1978 and people didn鈥檛 like it then and they wouldn鈥檛 like it now.

If someone fell ill she gave the gloomiest prognosis but when it came to seasonal weather she really came into her own, and should you meet her in June the 20th or 21st she would love to tell you that the days will be getting shorter now and that it will be no time until its winter again.

Egged on by one of his wicked friends the vicar decided to do something about this one year and just before Christmas as he ran into Primrose, he beamed as a only a vicar can and said 鈥渨hat a lovely day, Primrose and to think that now that we鈥檙e past the shortest day the days will be getting longer and brighter.鈥�

鈥淎ye,鈥� she replied without hesitation, 鈥渁nd you know what they say in the country, as the day lengthens, the cold strengthens!!!鈥�

Lord, forgive our lack of hope and generosity at times; Lift our spirits above all gloomy pessimism and no matter what the weather help us to bring some of your brightness to our world.
