Script

Good morning.

By today, the Easter break is probably a fading memory for most people. But the Church teaches that in the resurrection of Jesus, life conquers death and good conquers evil. And the reality is that we need not just a week, but a whole lifetime of experience to understand it and live out its implications.

This was certainly true of the disciples on the road to Emmaus after that first Easter Sunday. They were walking away from Jerusalem. All their hopes and dreams had ended in the death of Jesus. Unaware of His resurrection, we鈥檙e told 鈥溾 something prevented them from recognizing him鈥, as he came and walked beside them.听 They had lived with him, but they didn鈥檛 know him. He invited them to share their sorrows and sadness, to tell their story.听 When they had finished, he explained to them the passages of scripture that were about himself. They knew the texts. But they didn鈥檛 understand the meaning. When they drew near to Emmaus, He made as if to go on. He did not, and still does not, impose or restrict peoples freedom. They begged him to stay and as he joined them for a meal, they recognized him in the breaking of bread.

The account of the death and resurrection of Jesus is not just a story to be listened to on Easter Day once a year. The Emmaus experience is a lesson for life, not least reassuring us that Jesus walks with us even if, at times, something prevents us from recognizing him.

Stay with us, Lord

On every step of our journey

No matter how faltering our footsteps

Open our minds and hearts

To know that you are walking with us

On our way, every day Amen
