More than 73,000 people have now signed a petition calling for an end to Scotland's last traditional guga hunt. The hunting of sea birds was outlawed in 1954 in the UK but the community of Ness on the Isle of Lewis continues to be granted the only exemption allowing them to annually slaughter 2000 young gannets on the remote island of Sula Sgeir. The SSPCA calls the practice "cruel" and "barbaric". The row follows the inaugural world guga eating championship which was held on Lewis in December last year.
