Rabbi Y Y Rubinstein

Good morning. I was quite sure my first ever trip to Canada would also be my last. Everyone on my flight from New York, collected their luggage and walked easily through customs and immigration, everyone except me that is. I was directed to the immigration hall. An Immigration Officer looked up, beckoned me to him and asked suspiciously, "What is your reason for visiting Canada?" I told him I was there to deliver several lectures. He continued looking at me suspiciously and asked quickly and shrewdly, "On what topic?" "Marriage!" I replied just as quickly. The Canadian considered my answer and asked with the smallest of smiles, "Are you for it or against it?" I laughed and explained to him, "I鈥檓 married!" He smiled again, raised his eyebrows and declared, "I am too. That doesn鈥檛 prove a thing." We both laughed at his joke and he stamped my passport allowing me to enter the country.

Religious Orthodox Jews tend to get engaged after meeting for a very short amount of time, perhaps only a few weeks. Now if you find that weird and even a bit frightening, all I can say in defence of this way of doing things is ... "It works!"

The reason it does so, is that old fashioned marriage is still very much in vogue in Orthodox Jewish circles and when a young couple meet with a view to getting married they come with one essential ingredient... commitment.

The joke the Canadian made about marriage was of course right on target especially if people in a relationship are not committed to making the relationship work. And it does not matter what the relationship is, husband and wife, partners or friends... what makes a relationship last and weather difficult times, is commitment. Almighty please bless my friendships and relationships with commitment so that they will last, weather troubled times... and be truly blessed.
