Louise White asks whether early evening soaps are the right place to tackle issues like suicide or euthanasia.

Coronation Street viewers are currently engrossed in the unfolding horror of Hayley Cropper's battle with cancer. Her suffering is reaching its peak and she's now considering taking her life to end the pain. The Samaritans are worried that any portrayal could encourage vulnerable people in similar situations to copy what they see. Watching an actor slowly die of cancer is traumatic enough but are pre-water shed soaps the right place to tackle issues like suicide - or euthanasia?
