It was the 成人快手 Singers who in 1945 premiered Poulenc's a capella work Figure Humaine, which opens tonight's concert. It sets poems by Paul Eluard secretly circulated during the Occupation and is a moving tribute to the human spirit. It is followed by the composer's scintillating Concerto for Two Pianos, in the hands of two young stars, David Kadouch and Guillaume Vincent.
Ravel had few rivals as an orchestrator, as his music for the ballet Mother Goose reveals, heard tonight in a rare complete performance.
Roussel's 3rd Symphony was completed in 1930 and the composer happily declared that it was the best thing he had ever done.
The inimitable Frenchman Marc Minkowski is at the helm of the 成人快手 Symphony Orchestra and Singers, at home in his native repertoire and a welcome guest at the Barbican Centre in London.
