Janice Forsyth talks to Samantha Shannon about her debut novel The Bone Season, plus she has comedy with the first in a new series of comic monologues.
No pressure Dundee - but the city has a month to put in the full bid for the competition to win City of Culture in 2017. Janice will talk to Stewart Murdoch - who chairs the bid group and Gillian Easson who has set up the highly successful social media campaign for the bid - We Dundee. Author James Robertson tells us why he has re-written children's favourites in Scots to give us titles such as Georgie's mingin medicine, The Gruffalo's Wean and Katie's Pairty. He'll be joined by Chris Waddell, not the footballer but the learning manager of the Burns Birthplace museum and cottage and an ambassador for the Scots language. We'll speak to rising star Samantha Shannon who's first novel The Bone Season released earlier this month has made the New York Times Bestseller list. What's even more impressive is that she wrote it when she was 19. Plus there's more inspiration from singer-songwriter Emily Scott who is running her first music festival in her home town in Strathpeffer which takes place this weekend with headline acts Eddi Reader and Kassidy. And if you enjoyed 'Out of Africa' either as the novel or film you'll be interested in a play about its writer Karen Blixen and her powerful and intimate friendship with the young poet and writer Thorkild Bj酶rnvig. Inspired by letters, anecdotes and their writing, the UK premiere of The Baroness is this weekend at An Lanntair in Stornoway. Janice talks to the stars Roberta Taylor and Ewan Donald. And we've got new comedy too. Each Friday in the Culture Studio, we're inviting a range of writers and comedians to offer a series of comedy monologues. They can write a letter, a phone call, a blog. Today 28 year old Kieron Nicholson prepares to enter the world of backpacking, much to the bemusement of his parents.
