Pause for Thought

From Diane Louise Jordan, presenter of The Sunday Hour.

Last week I had the pleasure of looking after my nearly 4 year old Goddaughter Mya.聽 During piecing a jigsaw together I commented on how clever she was - without flinching she joyfully agreed!聽 Cute!

Then on the weekend, whilst filming a gospel competition, one of the contestants emerged after singing in front of the judges, saying that despite her nerves she was pleased with herself as she performed well because singing is what she's good at.

Whilst enjoying her delight, I also became a little uncomfortable on her behalf that her self-assured-ness may be misinterpreted not as cute, but arrogant.聽 She certainly isn't arrogant - she's gracious, generous - an all round good egg.

Sometimes though our enthusiasm about our own unquestionable talent can be construed by others as ego.

I think this has touched a nerve in me because my own exuberance about my talents have sometimes been mistaken as boasting when that really wasn't my intention.

At the same time, I've also noticed declaring our insecurities seems far more socially acceptable.聽 I wonder why.

Singer Jessie J made a good point about this last week.聽 She told the story of the school teacher who wouldn't allow her in the choir because she was too good and stood out too much which he said would upset the parents of the other pupils.聽 So Jesse never sang or studied music whilst at school.

Thankfully for the rest of us she didn't allow that discouragement to tarnish her self-belief.聽

And interestingly she applied those principles to heart surgeons, asking which surgeon would we want to operate on us, the one who was very modest about their ability, or the surgeon who demonstrated bold confidence?

I know which one I'd choose....聽

And my cute Goddaughter reminds me that happily proclaiming our true greatness (which, incidentally, is within all of us) is no bad thing.聽 If it's honest it won't have the whiff of superiority about it.
