Painkiller Addiction
America is in the middle of a painkiller addiction epidemic. Around 15,000 Americans are dying every year from prescription pill overdoses – triple the rate of a decade ago. The death toll exceeds that caused by heroin and cocaine combined. In the UK an estimated 1.5million people are addicted to prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Jenni Murray talsk to former prescription drug addict, Cathryn Kemp, Dr Cathy Stannard, a consultant in Pain Medicine at Bristol’s Frenchay Hospital and Nick Barton, Chief Executive of the charity .

The holy month of Ramadan is in full swing at the moment. It ends on the 10th August. For Muslims it means fasting between sunrise and sunset. The rules apply to everyone apart from children, the ill or the elderly, but it’s a tough one to stick to when the festival falls during the period when the days are at their longest and this year at their hottest. Catherine Carr took up an invitation to breakfast with a family from Harrow in London.

Jasmine Whitbread, the chief executive of , left her highly paid job in the commercial sector to work in the voluntary sector where, she says, her yearly salary was less than her bonus. She is on the Woman’s Hour and tells the programme why she made the move and how she has raised the ambitions of one of the biggest charities in the country.
