A Brief History of Time

Stephen Hawking鈥檚 鈥楢 Brief History of Time鈥 was the first popular science book to become a blockbusting bestseller. First published in June 1988, it aimed to make accessible to everybody ideas about the origins of the universe, relativity, black holes and quantum physics. It also made its author one of the most famous and recognisable figures in the world.

In this week鈥檚 Science Caf茅 Adam celebrates the 25th anniversary of the publication of 鈥楢 Brief History of Time鈥. He asks to what extent it pioneered popular science writing and paved the way for a wider public understanding of 鈥榖ig physics鈥. He and his guests explore some of the themes of the book, including black holes and quantum theory, and consider the book鈥檚 reputation as 鈥渢he least-read bestseller in history鈥.

Adam is joined for the discussion by science writer Marcus Chown, Swansea University theoretical physicist Dr. Prem Kumar and astronomer Dr. Edward Gomez, Education Director for the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network.
