Death of a Soldier – A Mother’s Soldier

On 12th May 2009 Lieutenant Mark Evison of 1st Battalion Welsh Guards died after being shot in the shoulder while leading a patrol in Helmand Province.ÌýMark was hailed as a hero and, at 26, one of the best of his generation of young officers.ÌýHe had kept a diary, an account of his few short weeks in Afghanistan.ÌýIn her book, Death of a Soldier, his mother Margaret includes some of these extracts, and writes about her experience of losing her son in these circumstances.ÌýShe joins Aasmah Mir to describe Mark, the sense of loss following his death, and how a foundation established in his name has helped her to see him again in the young people it supports.
