Particle Physics and the Higgs Boson

This week Adam Walton visits the home of the Welsh Government in Cardiff, which recently听 played host to a touring exhibition by the Science听&听Technology Facilities Council,听about the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and included a large model of a section of this famous听particle accelerator听at CERN, the nuclear research centre. Adam chats to Welsh scientist Dr Lyn Evans, who is based at CERN,听about the announcement in July this year that teams working at the LHC had discovered a "Higgs like particle", thought to be the elusive Higgs boson, the discovery of which would explain how matter gets its mass. It's thought that the definitve word on the particle will be announced in early 2013. Adam also meets Swansea based听physicists Professor Chris Allton and Professor Simon Hands who discuss their work in particle physics with particles such as the quark and the gluon, and the huge amount of data that the LHC generates for scientists to study.
