Celebrating Scottish gardens. The team is on the road to help complete the development of a new community garden used by those affected by homelessness in Maryhill, Glasgow.

The Beechgrove team are on the road this week to help out in the end stages of the development of a new community garden in Maryhill, in Glasgow.

Branston Court, recently fully refurbished by Ypeople, provides accommodation and support for up to 50 vulnerable people whose lives have been affected by homelessness. As well as providing the residents with safe and stable accommodation, Ypeople staff also support them in learning the life skills which will allow them to move on and integrate back into the wider community.

The residents are encouraged to be proactive in the running of Branston Court and had identified the garden as an area with great potential for development. Working alongside Ypeople and the British Trust of Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), they drew up plans and secured funding to create a small communal barbecue area and vegetable patch.

The involvement of the Beechgrove Garden has allowed those plans to be expanded and along with one of Beechgrove's garden designers, Lynn Harris, the young people have begun working on designs for a much larger more ambitious garden. The Beechgrove team will be on hand to help in the finishing stages of the garden but also will visit other local gardens and initiatives, such as the deceptively named but absolutely inspirational 'Concrete Garden'.

The Beechgrove Community Garden initiative has enabled over 200 community gardens to be created all over Scotland in the last 10 years.
