An Litir Bheag 293

鈥橲 e a鈥 Gh脿idhlig air 鈥淐hristmas鈥 鈥 Nollaig. Bidh sinn ag r脿dh ri ch猫ile, 鈥淣ollaig chridheil dhuibh鈥 airson 鈥淢erry Christmas to you鈥. Anns an t-seann aimsir, bha d脿 Nollaig ann 鈥 an Nollaig Mh貌r agus an Nollaig Bheag. B鈥 e an Nollaig Mh貌r Christmas. B鈥 e an Nollaig Bheag Latha na Bliadhn鈥 脵ire, New Year鈥檚 Day.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Aig an Nollaig bha daoine ri sp貌rs is dibhearsain. Bha iad ag ithe fe貌il gu le貌r. Seo rann mu dheidhinn:

Cha robh samhradh riamh gun ghrian,

Cha robh geamhradh riamh gun sneachd,

Cha robh Nollaig Mh貌r gun fhe貌il,

No bean 貌g le de貌in gun fhear.

An do thog sibh sin? Seo e a-rithist:

Cha robh samhradh riamh gun ghrian,

Cha robh geamhradh riamh gun sneachd,

Cha robh Nollaig Mh貌r gun fhe貌il,

No bean 貌g le de貌in gun fhear.

Cha chan mi cus mun loidhne mu dheireadh!

Seo seanfhacal eile mun Nollaig. Tha e gu math inntinneach 鈥 Nollaig an-diugh 鈥檚 Bealltainn a-m脿ireach. Christmas today and May-day tomorrow.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha na seann daoine ag r脿dh 鈥 nam biodh an Nollaig ann air, can, Diluain, gum biodh Latha na Bealltainn, a bha a鈥 leantainn air, air Dim脿irt. Nollaig an-diugh 鈥檚 Bealltainn a-m脿ireach. A bheil sin f矛or? Thug mi s霉il air na beagan bhliadhnaichean a dh鈥檉halbh:

Tha an seanfhacal ceart. 2007: Nollaig Dim脿irt, Bealltainn .. mmm .. Diardaoin. Cha do dh鈥檕braich sin. 2008: Nollaig Diardaoin, Bealltainn Dihaoine. Gl猫 mhath. 2009: Nollaig Dihaoine, Bealltainn Disathairne. Math dha-r矛ribh. 2010: Nollaig Disathairne, Bealltainn Did貌mhnaich. Sgoinneil. Agus 2011: Nollaig Did貌mhnaich, Bealltainn mmm Dim脿irt. Uill, tha e ag obair anns a鈥 chuid as motha de bhliadhnaichean.

Taobh a-staigh na h-aon bhliadhna m矛osachain, bidh Latha na Bealltainn agus Latha na Nollaig air an aon latha dhen t-seachdain. Eadar 2006 agus 2011, bha sin f矛or a h-uile bliadhna. A bheil seanfhacal ann mu dheidhinn sin? Bealltainn an-diugh is Nollaig an-diugh cuideachd...?

Guidheamaid buaidh is piseach oirbh,

听听听听听听听听听听听 Nur laighe 鈥檚 猫irigh sl脿n;

Ur taigh gun bhoinne snighe ann,

Nollaig Chridheil dhuibh uile.

The Little Letter 293

The Gaelic for Christmas is Nollaig. We say to each other, 鈥淣ollaig chridheil dhuibh鈥 for 鈥淢erry Christmas to you鈥. In the old days, there were two Nollaigs 鈥 the Nollaig Mh貌r and the Nollaig Bheag. The Nollaig Mh貌r was Christmas. The Nollaig Bheag was New Year鈥檚 Day.

At Christmas people were involved in fun and games. They ate a lot of meat. Here is a rhyme about it:

听听听听听听 There was never a summer without sun,

There was never a winter without snow,

Or a willing young woman without a man.

Did you get that? Here it is again:

听听听听听There was never a summer without sun,

There was never a winter with-out snow,

Or a willing young woman without a man.

听听听听听听听 I won鈥檛 say too much about the last line!

听听听听听听听 Here鈥檚 another proverb about Christmas. It鈥檚 very interesting 鈥 Nollaig an-diugh 鈥檚 Bealltainn a-m脿ireach. Christmas today and May Day tomorrow.

The old people were saying 鈥 if Christmas were on, say, Monday, that Beltane Day [May Day], that was following it, would be on Tuesday. Christmas today and May Day tomorrow. Is that true? I took a look at the last few years:

听听听听听 听听2006: Christmas Monday, May Day Tuesday. Very good. The proverb is correct. 2007: Christmas Tuesday, May Day .. mmm .. Thursday. That didn鈥檛 work. 2008: Christmas Thursday, May Day Friday. Very good. 2009: Christmas Friday, May Day Saturday. Excellent. 2010: Christmas Saturday, May Day Sun-day. Great. And 2011: Christmas Sunday, May Day .. mmm .. Tuesday. Well, it works in most years.

There is another pattern. Within the one calendar year, May Day and Christmas Day are on the same day of the week. Between 2006 and 2011 that was true every year. Is there a proverb about that? May Day today and Christmas today as well...?

Anyway, here is a traditional Christmas greeting:

听听听听听听听 Let us wish you success and prosperity,

Sleeping and rising healthily,

Your house without a drop of water oozing in,

And your meal chest full.

A Merry Christmas to you all
