Daniela Lehner, Escher String Quartet, Shabaka Hutchings

Mezzo-soprano Daniela Lehner in songs by Wilhelm Kienzl, plus jazz from British clarinettist Shabaka Hutchings and Haydn's Joke Quartet from the Escher String Quartet.

The Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme exists to provide support to some of the brightest talents in the world of classical music, and in the ten years of its existence has numbered artists such as the Belcea String Quartet, Paul Lewis, Janine Jansen, Natalie Clein and Alice Coote among its distinguished members.

In the fourth of ten early-evening programmes over the Christmas period, we hear studio performances by some of the scheme's current members, including tonight the Austrian mezzo-soprano Daniela Lehner in songs by Wilhlem Kienzl, and two newcomers to the scheme: British jazz clarinettist and, from the USA, the Escher String Quartet playing Haydn's 'Joke' Quartet.
