An Litir Bheag 259

D猫 a鈥 Gh脿idhlig a tha air elephant?聽Ailbhean, nach e? Ailbhean. Ach anns聽na seann fhaclairean tha m貌ran fhaclan聽ann. Seo eisimpleirean: ailp, boir,聽oileabhan, oilleabhaint agus albhan聽dubh. Tha e iongantach, nach eil?聽Tha am facal Beurla elephant a鈥櫬爐ighinn bhon Laidinn elephantus.聽Th脿inig sin bhon Ghreugais elephas.聽Ach tha cuid de na faclan co-cheangailte聽ri ailbheanan ann am聽Beurla a鈥 tighinn bho Hindi. Mar聽eisimpleir mahout 鈥 fear a bhios a鈥櫬爏ti霉ireadh ailbhean. Agus howdah 鈥撀爏uidheachan m貌r air muin ailbhein.聽O chionn beagan mh矛osan bha聽mi fh矛n ann an howdah air muin聽ailbhein. Bha mi ann airson d脿 uair a聽th矛de gu leth. Bha sin fada gu le貌r! Cha聽robh e uabhasach cofhurtail. Ach bha e聽math airson fiadh-bheatha fhaicinn.聽Bha mi ann am p脿irc n脿iseanta ann an聽Neapal.聽D猫 cho e貌lach 鈥檚 a bha na seann聽Cheiltich air ailbheanan? Uill, o chionn聽ghoirid bha mi a鈥 leughadh seann聽ph脿ipear ann am Fraingis air an robh聽Les Celtes et Les 脡l茅phants. Bha an t霉ghdar,聽am Proif. Gaidoz, ag r脿dh gur聽e a鈥 chiad turas a chunnaic m貌ran聽Cheilteach ailbheanan nuair a bha聽Hannibal a鈥 dol tarsainn nam beann.聽Bha sin anns a鈥 bhliadhna d脿 cheud is聽ochd-deug (218) RC. Bidh sibh e貌lach聽air eachdraidh Hannibal 鈥 an ceannard聽Carthaginianach 鈥 tha mi cinnteach.聽Dh鈥檉heuch na Ceiltich ri stad a聽chur air Hannibal. Bha sin aig Abhainn聽Rh么ne. Ach rinn Hannibal a鈥 ch霉is聽orra. Bha leth-cheud m矛le saighdear聽aige. Bha, agus faisg air ceathrad聽ailbhean-cogaidh. Chuir Hannibal na聽h-ailbheanan an s脿s an aghaidh nan聽Ceilteach. Bha eagal air na Ceiltich ro聽na h-ailbheanan. Is beag an tiongnadh!聽Bha treubhan Ceilteach eile a鈥櫬爁uireach ann an t矛r nan R貌manach. Bha聽feadhainn de na treubhan a鈥 fuireach聽far a bheil ceann a tuath na h-Eadailt聽an-diugh. Chunnaic iadsan ailbheanan聽Hannibal cuideachd.聽Agus dh鈥檌onnsaich na R貌manaich聽bho Hannibal. Ceud bliadhna 脿s聽d猫idh Hannibal chuir na R貌manaich聽ailbheanan an s脿s an aghaidh聽threubhan Ceilteach. Bheir sinn s霉il air聽sin an ath-sheachdain.

The Little Letter 259

What鈥檚 the Gaelic for 鈥渆lephant鈥?聽Ailbhean, isn鈥檛 it? Ailbhean. But in聽the old dictionaries there are many聽words. Here are examples: ailp, 聽boir, oileabhan, oilleabhaint and聽albhan dubh. It鈥檚 amazing, isn鈥檛 it?聽The English word elephant聽comes from the Latin elephantus.聽That came from the Greek elephas.聽But some of the words connected聽to elephants in English come from聽Hindi. For example mahout 鈥 a聽man who controls an elephant.聽And howdah 鈥 a large seat on the聽back of an elephant.聽A few months ago I was聽myself in a howdah on the back of聽an elephant. I was in it for two and聽a half hours. That was long聽enough! It wasn鈥檛 very comfortable.聽But it was good for seeing聽wildlife. I was in a national park in聽Nepal.聽How familiar were the old聽Celts with elephants? Well,聽recently I was reading an old聽paper in French called The Celts聽and the Elephants. The author,聽Prof. Gaidoz, was saying that the聽first time many Celts saw elephants聽was when Hannibal was聽crossing the mountains. That was聽in the year 218 BC. I鈥檓 sure you鈥檒l聽know the story of Hannibal 鈥 the聽Carthaginian leader.聽The Celts tried to stop聽Hannibal. That was at the River聽Rh么ne. But Hannibal defeated聽them. He had fifty thousand聽soldiers. And he also had nearly聽forty war elephants. Hannibal聽involved the elephants against the聽Celts. The Celts were frightened of聽the elephants. It鈥檚 hardly surprising!聽Other Celtic tribes were聽living in the Roman territory.聽Some of the tribes were living聽where the north of Italy is today.聽They saw Hannibal鈥檚 elephants as聽well.聽And the Romans learned from聽Hannibal. A hundred years after聽Hannibal the Romans involved聽elephants against Celtic tribes.聽We鈥檒l look at that next week.
