An Litir Bheag 255
Bha mi a鈥 coimhead air seann duilleag聽ann am Mac-Talla. 鈥橲 e sin seann聽ph脿ipear-naidheachd. Bha Mac-Talla air聽fhoillseachadh ann an Alba Nuadh. Bha聽sin aig deireadh an naoidheamh linn聽deug agus toiseach an fhicheadamh linn.聽Air an duilleig bha briathrachas聽airson rothaidheachd. A bheil sibh a鈥櫬爐uigsinn an fhacail sin 鈥 rothaidheachd?聽Tha e a鈥 ciallachadh 鈥渃ycling鈥. 鈥橲 d貌cha聽gur e baidhsagal a chanas sibh fh猫in聽airson 鈥渂icycle鈥. Th脿inig am facal sin聽bhon Bheurla. Chan eil e ann am Faclair聽Dwelly.聽Ann an cuid de na faclairean聽G脿idhlig as 霉ire, tha rothair ann airson聽bicycle. Rothair 鈥 R-O-T-H-A-I-R. Ach聽ann an Dwelly, 鈥檚 e rothar 鈥 R-O-T-HA-R. Tha am facal st猫idhichte air roth,聽seann fhacal G脿idhlig airson cuibhle.聽Tha sin againn ann am barra-roth, a鈥櫬燝h脿idhlig air wheelbarrow. Co-dhi霉,聽ann an Dwelly, tha am facal Beurla聽bicycle ann d脿 thuras. Agus seo a鈥櫬燝h脿idhlig air a shon: rothar d脿-chuibhleach聽agus each-iarainn. Chan eil聽mi a鈥 smaoineachadh gun canadh duine聽鈥渆ach-iarainn鈥 an-diugh! Cuideachd ann聽an Dwelly tha rothar (cycle), rothar tr矛rothan聽(tricycle), rothaidhe (cyclist)聽agus rothaidheachd (cycling).聽Tha an t-alt ann am Mac-Talla a鈥櫬爐oirt dhuinn faclan co-cheangailte ri聽rothar. Seo cuid aca: cluas (handle); slat聽(handlebar); gabhal (fork). Agus d猫 a鈥櫬燝h脿idhlig a tha air 鈥渟poke of a wheel鈥?聽Uill 鈥 ga, air a litreachadh G-A. Agus 鈥檚聽e bonn a tha aca air 鈥渢yre鈥: bonn cruaidh聽(solid tyre), bolg-bhonn (pneumatic聽tyre). Tha bolg no balg a鈥 ciallachadh聽鈥渁ir tube鈥. Ach c貌 chleachdadh bonn聽cruaidh air rothar an-diugh?Seo cuid eile de na faclan air an聽liosta: luasgan (spring); troighean聽(pedal), cn貌 (nut), deocan (valve),聽teannaire (pump) agus priocadh聽(puncture). Bidh sinn a鈥 cleachdadh cuid聽de na faclan sin fhathast. Ach, an 脿ite聽teannaire bidh daoine ag r脿dh pump. An聽脿ite priocadh canaidh iad toll.
The Little Letter 255
I was looking at an old page in Mac-Talla. That鈥檚 an old newspaper. Mac-Talla was published in Nova Scotia.聽That was at the end of the 19th聽Century and beginning of the 20th聽Century.聽On the page was a vocabulary聽for rothaidheachd. Do you understand聽that word 鈥 rothaidheachd. It聽means 鈥渃ycling鈥. Perhaps it鈥檚聽baidhsagal you say yourself for聽鈥渂icycle鈥. That word came from聽English. It鈥檚 not in Dwelly鈥檚 dictionary.聽In some of the most recent Gaelic聽dictionaries, rothair is there for聽bicycle. Rothair 鈥 R-O-T-H-A-I-R.聽But in Dwelly, it鈥檚 rothar 鈥 R-O-T-HA-R. The word is based on roth an old聽Gaelic word for a wheel. We have that聽in barra-roth, the Gaelic for聽鈥渨heelbarrow鈥. Anyway, in Dwelly,聽the English word bicycle appears聽twice. And here鈥檚 the Gaelic for it:聽rothar d脿-chuibhleach (鈥渢wo-wheeled聽cycle鈥) and each-iarainn (鈥渋ron聽horse鈥). I don鈥檛 think anyone would聽say 鈥渆ach-iarainn鈥 today! Also in聽Dwelly are rothar (cycle), rothar tr矛-rothan 聽(tricycle), rothaidhe (cyclist) 聽and rothaidheachd (cycling).聽The article in Mac-Talla gives us聽words connected to a bicycle. Here聽are some of them: cluas (handle); slat聽(handlebar); gabhal (fork). And聽what鈥檚 the Gaelic for the 鈥渟poke of a聽wheel鈥? Well 鈥 ga, spelt G-A. And it鈥檚聽bonn they have for 鈥渢yre鈥: bonn聽cruaidh (solid tyre), bolg-bhonn聽(pneumatic tyre). Bolg or balg means聽鈥渁ir tube鈥. But who鈥檇 use a solid tyre聽on a bicycle today?!聽Here are some of the other words聽on the list: luasgan (spring); troighean聽(pedal), cn貌 (nut), deocan (valve),聽teannaire (pump) and priocadh (puncture).聽We still use some of those聽words. But instead of teannaire,聽people say pump. Instead of priocadh,聽they say toll.
