Cha robh聽m貌ran bainne no c脿ise aig cuid de na聽tuathanaich. Bha iad a鈥 smaoineachadh聽gur e a鈥 bhana-bhuidseach a rinn sin.聽Latha a bha seo, air Latha na聽Bealltainne, th脿inig boireannach a聽ch猫ilidh air a鈥 bhana-bhuidsich. Bha i聽ag iarraidh comhairle fhaighinn. The Little Letter 244
There are two villages in Caithness聽called Ballachly 鈥 the township of聽the cemetery. There is a Ballachly聽near Dunbeath. There is another聽Ballachly between Dunbeath and聽Watten. It鈥檚 from that wee settlement聽that the story comes this week. Here聽is the story 鈥 鈥淭he Witch of聽Ballachly鈥.聽There was once a woman. Her聽nickname was The Raven. The聽people had a bad opinion of the聽woman. They said she was a witch.聽She lived in a wee bothy near聽Ballachly. Things weren鈥檛 going too聽well. Some of the farmers did not聽have much milk or cheese. They聽were thinking that the witch was聽responsible.聽One day, on the day of Beltane,聽a woman came to visit the witch. She聽was wanting to get advice. She聽found The Raven beside a burn. She聽was raking the grass with a heather聽rope. There was heather tied to the聽rope. The Raven was involved in聽witchcraft.聽People were seeing a hare聽amongst the cattle. Dogs couldn鈥檛聽catch the hare. A man set a snare.聽He used a peg of rowan wood.聽You鈥檒l know that the rowan tree聽works against witchcraft.聽A hare was caught in the snare.聽But when the man reached it, there聽was not a hare there. There was a聽woman. From that day onwards, the聽man had bad luck. He was drowned聽in the Thurso River.聽The story has a strange ending.聽There were two large standing聽stones. The Raven went to the first聽stone. She ran around it seven times聽sunwise. Then she ran around it聽seven times anti-sunwise.聽Two days after that, she was聽walking south. She stopped at a high聽point. And the high point is called聽Rock of the Raven. Then she continued.聽She left Caithness and nobody聽knows what happened to her.
