LSO/Gergiev
Martin Handley presents the LSO under Valery Gergiev in Stravinsky: Symphony in 3 Movements. Schoenberg: Violin Concerto (Nikolai Znaider - violin). Rachmaninov: Symphonic Dances.
Martin Handley presents a concert given at the Barbican Hall, London, for the London Symphony Orchestra's Emigres series, featuring three important works by European emigres in the USA, written in the 1930s and 1940s.
Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements, with its bold American gloss and material Stravinsky originally intended for Hollywood movie soundtracks, is followed by Schoenberg's Violin Concerto, a highly virtuosic piece that was branded unplayable at the time. These are followed by Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances, his final composition, and which conjure his Russian homeland.
