Episode 2 of 24

Horticultural tips. The team decide to build a garden which will weather the credit crunch, and Carole takes a look at some of the many slug and snail deterrents on the market.

These are testing times for everyone, financially. Beechgrove has always been about gardening on a budget, but in 2009 we are taking that a stage further and building a 'Credit crunch garden' in Beechgrove. Over the course of the series, our friends at Wrap Scotland will help us see this stylish little garden-on-a-shoestring take shape, an inspirational budget-bursting garden. A 'zero-waste' garden, full of recycling ideas, hints and tips. This week, where to begin?

We'll get you this... Slime. Slugs and snails have been declared the country's number one garden pest for the second year running by the Royal Horticultural Society. Now is the time to take evasive action, and Carole takes a look at, and trials, some of the many deterrents.

Jim is looking forward to summer fruit and growing his own five-a-day as he takes us through the developments in the new 'family orchard'. Meanwhile, Lesley deals with dahlias; what do you do once you get them home from the garden centre?
