Why shouldn't Woolies be bailed out?

Is it right we're bailing out the banks but not Woolworths? Graham Stewart takes your calls.

Is it right we're bailing out the banks but not Woolworths?

It's one of those defining days when the impact of the recession really hits home. Two of Britain's iconic names are about to disappear: HBOS, the Scottish banking institution dating back 300 years, is likely to be taken over by Lloyds TSB; and administators are about to close down Woolworths and its chain of 800 stores.

Both sad stories, both likely to result in a similar number of redundancies. The difference is that we're ploughing up to 拢17bn pounds into the merged bank and nothing into Woolworths. Is that right? In the States they've talked about bailing out the car industry, so should we support our retail industry?

Graham Stewart takes your calls, texts and emails.
