Philharmonia Orchestra principal conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi talks to Norman Lebrecht about his eventful musical career. Grandson of the composer Erno von Dohnanyi and nephew of the theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Dohnanyi grew up in the Austro-German tradition of music making. His first appointment as music director was in Lubeck and he later went on to positions in Frankfurt, Hamburg and, most famously, with the Cleveland Orchestra for two decades.
