Norman Lebrecht talks to German singer Brigitte Fassbaender, who has excelled onstage in the great mezzo roles in the music of Strauss and Mozart amongst others. Also one of the leading lieder singers of her day, she tells Norman about her career as one of the great mezzos of the 20th century, about her experiences growing up in wartime Germany, the great conductors she worked with and about her present role as a theatre and opera director in Innsbruck.
